Raiders Lapse in Tampa
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. — Jillian Herbst totaled four hits and the Raiders homered twice, but it was not enough as the University of South Florida took down Colgate, 5-1 and 3-2, on Tuesday night in Tampa.
The Raiders scored first in both games but could not hold on as their losing streak ballooned to four games, the longest skid of the season.
Game 1 - Colgate 1, USF 5
Rachel Carney reached base for the fifth-consecutive game to start the evening, drawing a walk before stealing second, her Patriot League-leading 15th stolen base on the season.
After Jillian Herbst pushed Carney to third base with a ground ball to the right side, Kiley Shelton sent a rocket to second base, where the ball was misplaced and allowed Carney to scamper home.
Defending a one-run lead, Bailey Misken found herself in an early jam in the bottom of the first but escaped only allowing two runs on a pair of hits.
Herbst sent a double into the gap in the top of the third, but Colgate could not send her around to even the score.
USF pulled away in the bottom of the frame when a two-run double scored two runs and extended the advantage to three.
Two Raider errors in the bottom of the fourth added another run for the home side, but a mini two-out rally saw Carney get on base for the second time and Herbst register her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
The Bulls were not phased, however, as a pitching change forced Shelton to produce a dribbler to second base that ended the inning.
Misken earned three of her six total strikeouts as Colgate went hitless across the final two innings, sealing a 5-1 loss for the Raiders.
Game 2 - Colgate 2, USF 3
An uneventful first frame led to a two-run second headlined by Livesay's third home run of the season. The lead did not last for too long, with Bulls answering quickly on an RBI single to knot the score at one.
Maya Servedio continued dealing through the fifth inning, only walking two batters and allowing one run while striking out two.
In the top of the sixth, Kara Fusco launched a game-changing long ball over the left field fence that put Colgate in front with nine outs left to play.
A one-two-three inning from Servedio set the stage for another dangerous inning for the Raiders in the seventh, where a Dougherty walk followed by a Megenity sacrifice bunt put an insurance run on second with only one out. Carney was unable to add to the lead, though, and struck out looking to head to the bottom of the frame.
With only three outs separating Servedio from her second complete game of the season, a video review put a runner on base after she was originally retired courtesy of a Carney putout. A bunt pushed the USF base runner to second, where she promptly scored on an error by Dougherty in left field.
With the Bulls threatening to walk it off, Livesay caught a runner stealing second to send the game to extra innings.
But the Raiders could not muster anything in the top of the eighth, and the Bulls walked it off with a single up the middle to sweep the doubleheader on Tuesday night.
