Raiders Falter in Patriot League Opener
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Colgate held leads of 5-1 and 3-0, but could not defend either as the Raiders fell to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 10-5 and 5-3, respectively, in a league-opening double-header.
Four different Raiders logged multi-hit games in the afternoon, including Adrienne Nardone's three-for-three performance in the second outing, but it was not enough to halt the Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem.
Game 1 - Colgate 5, Lehigh 10
Rachel Carney set the tone in game one with a highlight-reel catch at shortstop that highlighted a scoreless first frame.
Colgate did not stay silent for long, however, as Nardone logged her third hit in as many at-bats to kickstart a Raider rally in the second. Operating with the bases loaded and two outs, Nora Megenity cleared the bases with a double for her first career three-RBI game.
Now at the top of the lineup, Carney put Colgate up by four with her first triple of the season to score Megenity.
Maya Servedio posted two of her four strikeouts in the home half of the second, but found herself in a jam when she allowed two hits and a walk. After stranding two runners in the first, the Mountain Hawks again failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position when Servedio forced a ground ball to end the inning with the bases loaded.
A mistake from Servedio left a payoff pitch hanging over the plate for Lehigh's Julia Mrochko, who launched a long ball to cut the Raiders' lead to three.
Kiley Shelton responded immediately in the top of the fifth with the fourth homer of her rookie campaign, reasserting a four-run Raider lead.
In the fifth inning, the Mountain Hawks again put runners in scoring position with only one out. This time, the home team cashed in with a monster seven-run inning to take an 8-5 lead into the sixth stanza.
Alex Acker took the reins in the circle midway through the fifth-inning rally, but Lehigh knocked her out of the game in the following frame when she conceded two more tallies to seal the win in game one of the doubleheader.
Game 2 - Colgate 3, Lehigh 5
Colgate started game two with six straight hits to build a 3-0 lead, but the Mountain Hawks returned the favor with four hits in their first five batters that evened the score after one.
The Raiders threatened again in the top of the third when a double from Kara Fusco put runners on second and third with one out, but Quinn Livesay grounded into a double play to end the inning scoreless.
Lehigh took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth frame on an error in right field.
Nardone continued her hot streak with a leadoff double in the sixth, but the Raiders could not bring her home to cut into the deficit.
Bailey Misken kept Colgate within striking distance as she struck out the side in the home half of the sixth and the Raiders put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh.
Herbst and Shelton failed to keep the momentum rolling, and the Raiders were swept by the Mountain Hawks in the Sunday doubleheader.
