Softball Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Colgate softball pushed their record to 3-1 at the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla., with a 3-2 win against Sacred Heart and an 8-0 thrashing of Manhattan on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm really happy with how we came out today," head coach Marissa Lamison-Myers said. "Our pitchers and defense stepped it up in game one and our bats came alive in game two paired with another Bailey Misken shutout. Hopefully, we keep the momentum going into Monday."
Game 1 - Colgate 3, Sacred Heart 2
Back-to-back singles from Niamh Dougherty and Quinn Livesay in the bottom of the second put two Raiders on base with only one out. Nora Megenitity's sacrifice bunt pushed the runners into scoring position and brought Elizabeth Nitka to the plate.
Nitka capitalized on the string of singles, sending a hard-hit ball straight back to the pitcher to score Dougherty and record the first run of the day.
Maya Servedio was dealing on the mound, working out of jams with runners in scoring position in the third and fourth to preserve the one-run lead.
The Raider bats came back to life in the top of the fifth when Jillian Herbst sent a double off the left-field wall to score Megenity from second, and after advancing to third on the throw home, Herbst tagged up on a sacrifice fly from Kiley Shelton to put Colgate ahead by three.
Servedio ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, backing herself into a bases-loaded situation with only one out. The sophomore allowed one run to score after giving up a single to left, and Lamison-Myers opted to throw Mia Edwards into the circle to stop the bleeding.
Edwards did just that, forcing a dribbler to shortstop which Rachel Carney and Herbst turned into a six-four-three double play to end the inning with minimal damage.
Colgate did allow Sacred Heart to cut the lead to just one in the bottom of the sixth, but Bailey Misken came in and retired the side to give the Raiders their second-straight victory.
Game 2 - Colgate 8, Manhattan 0
An evenly-matched pitching duel saw only two hits through the first three and a half innings of play.
The bats on both sides were silenced until consecutive hits from Shelton and Adrienne Nardone in the bottom of the fourth put runners on the corners with no outs. Dougherty found a way to load the bases, and Megenity picked up the first RBI of game two when she drew a walk.
Nitka shot a double in the gap for her second, third, and fourth RBIs of the day that propelled Colgate out in front after four frames.
Misken, who ended the outing with a season-high nine strikeouts, continued her dominant day by retiring Manhattan in order to start the fifth inning. Nardone went on to pick up her second hit and first RBI of the game in the bottom of the stanza when she doubled home Shelton.
In the bottom of the sixth, Colgate scored three runs on four hits to put the mercy rule into effect and end the lopsided victory ahead of schedule.
