Raiders Rally Falls Short Against BU

HAMILTON  — Colgate held the potent Boston University lineup in check for the majority of Sunday afternoon, but they were unable to capitalize in the batter's box, losing to the Terriers, 6-0, and 4-2, at Eaton Street Softball Complex.

HAMILTON  — Colgate held the potent Boston University lineup in check for the majority of Sunday afternoon, but they were unable to capitalize in the batter's box, losing to the Terriers, 6-0, and 4-2, at Eaton Street Softball Complex.

Bailey Misken and Maya Servedio both threw complete games, combining to allow only eight earned runs to a BU lineup that ranks 15th in the country with a .331 team batting average.

Despite the stellar pitching, the Raiders hurt themselves at the plate where they hit .071 with runners on base in game one and did not register a hit in game two until the seventh inning.

Game 1 - Colgate 0, BU 6
Misken conceded a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning but rebounded quickly to only allow two hits across the next two stanzas.

Colgate threatened to cut into the deficit in the home half of the second when Quinn Livesay and Niamh Dougherty strung together back to back singles, but the bottom of the Raiders' lineup could not bring them around.

A sacrifice fly produced a 3-0 lead for the visitor in the top of the fifth, which was then stretched to 4-0 in the sixth after a one, two, three inning from the Raiders in the bottom of the frame.

A pair of unearned runs crossed the plate for BU to open the seventh, and Colgate stranded two in the final inning to close the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2 - Colgate 2, BU 4
A Terrier runner scampered home on a double-steal with two outs in the second inning, but Colgate remained within striking distance for the entirety of game two thanks to Servedio's excellent outing in the circle.

The Raiders were no-hit through six innings of play, but the bats jolted to life in the bottom of the seventh with the game on the line.

Rachel Carney broke up BU's perfect game with a single to kick off the inning, and Kiley Shelton was hit by a pitch one batter later to put the winning run at the plate.

Kara Fusco stepped into the batter's box with two outs, delivering one of the most clutch at-bats of the season in a 10-pitch battle. Her perseverance at the plate paid off with a two-RBI double that knotted the score at two and sent the game to extra innings.

BU scored twice in the eighth but the Raiders did not go away, putting Nitka and Carney aboard with only one out in the bottom of the added inning.

But after giving the nationally-ranked Terriers all they could handle, the Raiders could not pull off the upset and fell to Boston University, 4-2, in extras.
