Women’s Tennis Defeats Hofstra
Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate ended their three-match weekend with a 5-2 victory over Hofstra Sunday morning. The Raiders swept all three doubles courts then proceeded to take four of six singles matches to win comfortably.
"Our grueling and challenging schedule is paying off," said Head Coach Bobby Pennington. "The toughest schedule for the most talented team I've coached here and bought in. That was a very tough Hofstra team who beat Bucknell earlier this season. We swept the doubles and in singles Montero, Eklund, Hess and Cristobal won in straight sets. Bring on Le Moyne and my dear friend Jeffrey on Saturday."
The Raiders opened doubles action strongly with senior captain Eliza Podlas and sophomore Carina Cristobal taking court two, 6-0. Junior Amelia Galin and sophomore Sophia Montero won 6-4 at line one, and first-year Rebecca Hess and senior Addie Eklund also won 6-4 at line three to complete the doubles sweep.
Hofstra opened singles taking court three over first-year Anya Kunar 6-3, 6-2. However, Cristobal immediately responded at line six with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Montero shortly followed with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at line two to extend the lead for the Raiders. The match was clinched for the squad by Eklund at line four with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Hess tacked on a win on court five to bring the win total to five on the day for Colgate.
The Raiders return to action on Saturday, March 8, where they will take on Le Moyne at 4 p.m. at Drumlins Country Club.
