Colgate Kicks off League Play with Win
Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Three Raiders went undefeated in an emphatic 5-2 win against Holy Cross, Colgate's first Patriot League victory of the season. With the triumph, the Raiders remain a perfect 21-0 against the Crusaders in the all-time series that dates back to 1991.
"Credit to our ladies for a quality league win today," head coach Bobby Pennington said. "Holy Cross is far improved from last year and it showed. We were without our number one Sophia Montero and all had to step up. The ladies stand at 8-7 now but much more importantly 1-0 in conference. We will now rest, recover, and prepare for our big rival Lehigh next weekend."
Colgate claimed the first point in less than 30 minutes after sweeping doubles play. Amelia Galin/Addie Eklund dominated on court one (6-1) while Carina Cristobal/Gigi Bohan (6-2) and Eliza Podlas/Avery Isaac (6-2) both handled Holy Cross on two and three, respectively.
Bohan continued the momentum in sixth singles when her opponent retired, but Holy Cross showed resolve with a win on court two.
Cristobal was quick to respond, though, logging her first triumph in the top slot that pushed Colgate to the brink of victory. Eklund jumped at the opportunity, clinching the duel for the Raiders with a 6-3, 7-5 win in singles three.
After the decision was final, Sasha Herman joined the party with a 6-4, 6-3 win to put an exclamation mark on Colgate's first league win of the year.
