Colgate Takes Down Binghamton, 3-1

HAMILTON — Colgate (10-9, 8-1 Patriot) defended Cotterell Court, beating Binghamton (12-9) by a score of 3-1 in non-conference action Wednesday night.

HAMILTON — Colgate (10-9, 8-1 Patriot) defended Cotterell Court, beating Binghamton (12-9, 2-2 America East) by a score of 3-1 in non-conference action Wednesday night. 

Abby Shadwick was on fire from the onset, finishing with 19 kills, nine digs, and a .400 hitting percentage. Sydney Jones and Deren Cukur each had 24 assists to key Colgate's .317 hitting clip as a team. Maddie Rudolph and Shadwick each had two blocks, while Rachael Martinez led the squad with 23 digs. 

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS

"We had a strong offensive night versus a well-coached and competitive Binghamton team. I liked our start tonight along with our adjustments. We will learn from this win and keep working to improve throughout the season."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 | Colgate 25, Binghamton 23
The Raiders jumped out to an early 18-12 lead, but the Bearcats battled back to even the set at 20 apiece. The teams kept going back and forth until at 23-all, Shadwick came up with two clutch kills to take the set. 

Set 2 | Colgate 25, Binghamton 18
Colgate rode the momentum from the first set, holding a comfortable lead for the entire second set to win it 25-18. The squad came up with 16 kills and had a .353 hitting percentage for the set. Tiana Owens led the Raiders with four kills. 

Set 3 | Binghamton 25, Colgate 23
The third set saw the two teams trading blows back and forth, but Binghamton was able to pull away late to take the set. The Bearcats were led by their 17 kills, and Colgate hampered by six attack errors. 

Set 4 | Colgate 25, Binghamton 21
Colgate took the fourth set and the match 25-21, led by strong serving from Shadwick and Martinez, who each contributed an ace. Jones played a key role in the set with seven assists, and the squad only made a pair of attacking errors.

UP NEXT
Colgate returns to Patriot League play on Saturday when the Raiders host Loyola at 6 p.m. as the final match of its three-game homestand. Colgate rallied to win the final three sets in a 3-1 victory over the Greyhounds last Friday in Baltimore.
