Men’s Lacrosse Adds Two Members to Coaching Staff

Coming from previous Division I talent, the men's lacrosse program has added Ian Farley and Gage Ponsetti to its coaching staff

Hamilton, N.Y. — Coming from previous Division I talent, the men's lacrosse program has added Ian Farley and Gage Ponsetti to its coaching staff.

Joining Colgate's squad, Farley brings a plethora of offensive experience and will be the new Assistant Coach with the program. He previously served as the Men's Lacrosse Assistant Coach at Quinnipiac University, he was the offensive coordinator and managed player development. Working with the team for two seasons, Farley developed the offense to finish the 2024 season ranked No. 2 in shooting percentage and No. 11 for offensive efficiency in the country.

Prior to Quinnipiac, Farley was named the head coach at Mount Saint Mary College for the 2022–23 academic year. He helped the Knights make the Skyline Conference Semi-Final appearance after a 4–3 conference performance. He also helped build the offensive unit and develop players at Colby College for an academic term, 2021–22.

Making an impact at Holy Cross, Farley was their assistant coach/offensive coordinator throughout the 2018–21 seasons. His responsibilities entailed player development, scouting, and film breakdown. During his time with the Crusaders, Farley helped mentor an All-Patriot League selection and two Major League Lacrosse draft picks.

Farley also had collegiate coaching experience at Sacred Heart University (2017–18), Marist College (2017), and John Carroll University (2015-16).

The New York native played collegiate lacrosse at Sacred Heart. He was appointed to be the team captain during his 2014–15 campaign, and also was a member of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He earned his bachelor's degree from John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart in 2015.

"I'm truly honored to join the Colgate men's lacrosse program," Farley said. "The culture that Coach Karweck and his staff have built—centered on Grit, Growth, and Gratitude—reflects a deep commitment to excellence both on and off the field. I'm excited to begin working with the student-athletes in the program and to build meaningful relationships throughout the Colgate community."

Building the program on the defensive end, Ponsetti has the skill set to develop defensive units and goalkeepers within the collegiate setting.

Joining Colgate's coaching staff, Ponsetti has assumed the role of the Director of Operations/Assistant Coach. He was previously a member of the men's lacrosse program at Virginia Military Institute where he was the Special Teams Coordinator for two academic terms, 2023–25. In the 2024 season, the final season that the Keydets were a member of the MAAC, the team finished 7–8 overall and 3–6 in the conference. Moving to the Northeast Conference in 2025, VMI had a breakout season finishing 10–4 overall and 4–3 in the NEC. This marked the first time the program finished with a double digit overall record since 1988 when the team was 11–3.

Through Ponsetti's guidance, the Keydets' defense allowed the fewest goals per game in 12 years and improved by 1.7 goals against from the previous season. He also helped VMI to be ranked No. 1 in the country for clearing percentage.

Aside from his time at VMI, Ponsetti started his coaching career at Wheeling University as a defensive coordinator in the 2022 academic year. He helped lead the defensive unit to a top-10 national ranking, No. 8 in extra-man defense, while all goalkeepers finished the season with a save percentage at or above 50 percent.

Ponsetti attended Alfred University in 2021 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology while currently obtaining his Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (Athletic Concentration) from Wheeling University, and he is anticipated to graduate in the winter of 2025.

"I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to join the Colgate lacrosse program and work with a phenomenal group of coaches. I look forward to beginning to build relationships with the players and University. I am excited to learn and develop as a coach under Coach Karweck's leadership. G G G"
